Title: The ball of wool
Summary: The participants stand in a circle. The vi facilitator gives one of the participants a ball of wool and asks him/her two questions that have to do with personal issues (hobbies, music, films, experiences, dreams, etc.). The participant answers the two questions and, keeping the ball of wool, passes it on to another participant, who asks a couple more questions. The same pattern is repeated until all participants have gone through the two questions and, in turn, a spider-like web is woven.
Objectives: To break the ice and encourage curiosity about the colleagues who will be sharing the classroom during this training period. Raise awareness among sighted people.
Materials / Equipment needed: A ball of wool. Blindfolds.
Group size: Any size
Duration: 1 minute per participant
Step-by-step instructions: The vi facilitator gives sighted or visually impaired participants a blindfold. He/she asks the participants to put the blindfold over their eyes and stand in a circle. There should always be a sighted or visually impaired person present in case they need any help. Give one of the participants a ball of wool and ask him/her two questions that have to do with personal issues (hobbies, music, films, experiences, dreams, etc.). The participant answers the two questions and, keeping the ball of wool, passes it on to another participant, who asks a couple more questions. The same pattern is repeated until all participants have gone through the two questions and, in turn, a spider-like web is woven.
Reflection and evaluation questions: How did you feel? Was it difficult to find your way around? What difficulties did you encounter? Did you need help in forming the circle, passing and receiving the ball of wool?
Possible risk factors: The vi facilitator should remove all obstacles from the place where the activity is to take place.
Variations: No need for adaptation to different age groups.
