Title: Sharing my personal objects
Summary:

This exercise is to be used best at the beginning when the group starts working together (in the introduction or building the foundation part).

Each participant takes 3 objects from their purse or pockets and shares with the group why they have this object with them and what do they mean to them. After the vi facilitator give these instructions each participant will say his or her name and will share the story of the three objects he would like to talk about. Also, when talking about each of the object the participant would need to also say / describe the objects he or she talks about.

Objectives:

Breaking the ice, getting to know each other.

Materials / Equipment needed:

No materials are needed for this exercise.

Group size: Any size
Duration: 15 minutes (1 or 2 minutes / participant)
Step-by-step instructions:

The steps and rules of the exercise are explained in the summary section.

Reflection and evaluation questions:

No reflection is needed for this exercise but in case the vi facilitator would like to finish the session with a reflection phase, they can ask participants how it was to talk about their personal objects and if it was difficult for them to find a meaning for the objects they talked about.

Possible risk factors:

It is possible for participants to stay silent or not to find the meaning for the things they choose. It can also happen that participants are shy to talk in public and in this case the vi facilitator should not pressure the participant to talk. Not all participants should talk and persons can be skipped in case they do not feel comfortable to talk.

Variations:

The exercise can be done with participants of any age and the only adaptation should be in language in case the participants are very very young.
