Title: Can you see a movie in the dark?
Summary: This activity allow participants to experience, through a simulation exercise, how it is to watch a movie without seeing the images on the screen. It also allow participants to experience audio description.
Objectives:

Enable participants to understand what is an audio described film and how it works. In addition, it allows participants to experience the feeling of watching a movie without seeing its images. Increase participants’ listening skills.

This activity can be done by visually impaired and sighted people togheter. This is why it can be suitable for an awareness raising workshop on visual impairment.

Materials / Equipment needed: A laptop. An audio described movie (only the audio track, not the video).
Group size: Any size
Duration: 15 minutes
Step-by-step instructions: Before implementing this activity, the visually impaired facilitator must have identified an audio described movie and must have chosen a short part of it to play (max 10 min). It is important to have just the audio track, not the video, otherwise you need blindfolds for the participants. The activity is very simple: the facilitator plays the audiodescribed movie with a computer. The activity ends with a debriefing held by the facilitator using some questions for reflection e.g. the ones of the “Reflection / Evaluation questions” section.
Reflection and evaluation questions: To conclude the activity the facilitator asks participants to share their impressions, thoughts and feelings. Some questions might be: What did you find difficult? How did you feel? What did you learn/find out? How did you feel  when watching the movie without seeing its images?
Possible risk factors: It is important to play the audiodescribed movie for a short period (max 10 min) because it is often very tiring for sighted People. They are not used to just listen to movies and they get often bored / asleep.
Variations: For braver groups, you can try the experience of seeing a complete audio-described movie.
